From: Katherine Bostick, Senior Program Officer, Aquaculture, World Wildlife Fund
On behalf of the Steering Committee, I’m pleased to provide you with the following updates on the Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue:
· The November meeting was a success, with extensive opportunities to discuss the draft indicators. The meeting summary, including numerous pages of specific comments collected during small group discussion at the meeting, is available on the website (www.worldwildlife.org/salmondialogue).
· The next meeting of the Dialogue will be held in Puerto Varas, Chile on March 23, 2010. The meeting will focus on the presentation and discussion of the Social Working Group report on the social and labor issues surrounding salmon farming around the world.
· Thank you to all of the individuals and organizations who took the time to submit written comments on the draft indicators. Those comments have been compiled and posted on the website at http://www.worldwildlife.org/what/globalmarkets/aquaculture/salmon-additionalresources.html. The comments are being considered by the Steering Committee as they move forward revising indicators and drafting standards.
· The Steering Committee hopes to release revised draft indicators and first draft standards for comment in mid-April. A series of meetings, conference calls, or other outreach activities in April, May, and June will provide stakeholders the opportunity to discuss and provide constructive feedback on the suite of principles, criteria, indicators and standards. This will be the first of two public comments periods on the standards document.
· A work program outlining the next steps for the Dialogue in 2010 will be posted on the website in the coming weeks.
I will be attending the Seafood Summit in Paris at the end of January, along with several members of the Salmon Dialogue Steering Committee. If you plan to attend the Summit and would like to arrange a time to meet with me to discuss the Dialogue, please email me here.
