Opportunities Related to Holding and/or Transporting Salmon and Other Fin Fish Alive
By Kellus Sewell
More fishermen and processors should explore methods to keep fish alive as long as doing so does not impede the profitability of existing commercial operations.
Options include,
· brailing, pumping or swimming fish into the hold and keeping them alive with correct oxygen and salinity until processed,
· transporting fish alive to net pens hauled to the fishing grounds or site, or to net pens at the processing plant
· pumping live fish into a "whale" boat as they are called in Norway, which is designed to maintain the correct salinity and oxygen levels in transport to the processor.
