Right Off The Money

If we had a non-kudo's or wall of shame, this might go there.

I had dinner with a friend and colleague.  He is a professional in his business of sourcing and preparing uniquely Alaskan foods.    He is the kind of guy who walks the talk when it comes to supporting a sustainable and strong food industry in our state.

He volunteered to oversee the preparation of an ALL Alaskan foods meal at a recent event.   I won't name names, because this situation is not unique.     I saw it the week before, as well.    I also saw it two weeks prior to that.

This All Alaskan foods meal was designed to lay out the value proposition of providing greater support to our food industry.   To recognize its contribution and make the case for creating policies that support its growth.

My friend asked to make a few remarks at the event.   His offer was declined.   Instead, presentations were made by producers proudly showing their products at the event meal.

I asked my friend.  What do you think will change as a result of the event?      He did not have to answer.   I expect nothing.

The entire event was right off the money!      Not one commercial buyer was invited or invited to speak to make the case for why the industry should be supported.     Wouldn't that have captured your attention if Safeway said, "we buy so many pounds of ___ and we would like to source it locally in this manner.  Help us make that happen to keep money in your own community and businesses."     What if it was Costco?   The Hilton Hotel?    Doyon?      The Anchorage School District?     The military bases?

Well, they were not there that day, but there was one loyal and steadfast buyer in the room.  The person helping coordinate the food preparation and an individual responsible for sourcing food from all over Alaska.   "No, thank you.   We don't have time.. we're too busy making the case for our industry."

Let's work to remember that until we get buyers to the table.  Nothing will ever make our industry and businesses stronger.
