The Forever Alaska Problem Finds A Solution

Tednologies delivers Mat-Su ice cream to YK schools

Ever vigilant to study and improve Alaska’s cold chain management delivery of goods to market, the Tednologies, Inc. team recently completed a shipment of ice cream to the rural communities of Mountain Village, Hooper Bay and Pilot Station.

“We proved again that our PB05 and PB02 containers could hold their temperature and successfully ship ice cream to the Lower Yukon School District,” said Ian Wilson, vice president of marketing and sales for Tednologies, Inc.

Using 10 different flavors of Matanuska Creamery ice cream for an in-service day treat for the schools, Don Harman, President of Tednologies, and Mr. Wilson, sent 27 half gallons of gourmet ice cream to Bethel.  It was then transloaded on to a Hageland charter to be delivered to each community.

“It is easy to see how shipments to the rural Alaska get ruined” said Wilson.  “Cardboard and Styrofoam just doesn’t cut it.  Shipping out there is challenging.”

Earlier this spring Harman completed a trial run to Mountain Village to prove that his insulated containers were more than self sufficient enough to deliver ice cream to rural Alaska.

To prove shipping challenges, two of the shipments, Mountain Village and Hooper Bay were delivered on time and the ice cream retained its consistency.  Some 36 hours later, Pilot Station’s ice cream was delivered due to a weather delay.

“The Pilot Station shipment was protected by the air carriers and it too was received in perfect condition,” said Wilson.  “All of the ice cream was delivered with an inside container temperature of zero degrees.”

Harman uses ice cream in their containers because of its sensitivity to temperature and uses Radio Frequency Identification temperature tracking to show temperature differences along the path to delivery.  "Ice cream is the ultimate test and a perfect product to give our Tednologies line the ultimate test.  “Variances in temperature causes problems for any perishable or temperature sensitive products (PTSP), especially ice cream, our containers remove those variances,” said Harman.
