Bringing Happiness - Tonia's Biscotti
- 1-18-2010
- Categorized in: Market INSIGHTS
Tonia Winkler is selling happiness. How? She prepares and sells her specialty biscotti and sees the smiles after people take their first bite.
A good friend recently reminded me that having an occasional bite of chocolate or a sweet improves attitudes - a good option to offset the winter chills compounded with lack of daylight. With all of the exercise ads and diet commercials of late, I suppose the "happiness factor" had skipped my mind. Now, Tonia reminds us she is selling happiness. Who couldn't use a little or a lot of that? And what about for your Valentine? How about a little happiness for those you love? Tonia's Biscotti has a continually growing list of products and a growing list of distribution locations.

Tonia Winkler, a long time GFC member is likely familiar to so many through the tradeshows and events where she personally markets her trademark biscotti. While this affords her the opportunity to keeps a pulse on her customers and the marketplace, Tonia's business has continued to significantly grow. Now you can find her products in retailers throughout Alaska (see below for list). At the same time, her product line has grown to nearly one dozen flavors including the debut last month of Lemon biscotti. Watch for birch syrup flavored to debut in 2010, a likely favorite with summer visitors seeking unique gifts. If you haven't checked in lately, Tonia has added a 7 ounce package to her original 13 ounce, as well as a gift tote of an assortment of 90 biscotti bites.

All of this growth has led to expanded ways people are finding Tonia's Biscotti. In 2010, businesses sought her out for corporate gifts and custom orders. Returning consumers visited her on-line store. She opened a summer retail booth at the Saturday Market and will return again in 2010.
So why the growth in challenging economic times? Tonia has a very optimistic and energetic attitude. In uncertain times, her belief and care in her product and business never waned. (She eats biscotti and maybe it really does translate to happiness.) Her quality control for long-time customers, is always overseen by her own watchful eye. Tonia has continued to build her business and respond to a growing customer base, without backing off. Her energy and that of the team that produces and markets is boundless (they are happy, too). The bottom line is that Tonia has a dream for her biscotti business. She does not deviate from her business plan and puts genuinely hard work into her product and company each and every day and yes, that is 7 days a week.
Collaboratiions? Tonia welcomes collaboration and in 2010 she continues to seek out those that would like to collaborate on a commercial kitchen. Whether that is simply sharing knowledge, distribution, sourcing or beyond, she understands the value of business collaboration as evidenced at how tirelessly she works a tradeshow with customers and other suppliers.
The Upside of Biscotti. Biscotti is well pared with wine, coffee, milk and sorbet's and adds an element of international flavor and celebration to social events. It doesn't hurt that biscotti is low in fat and sugar. Another plus, biscotti has a nearly 12 month shelf-stability. According to Tonia, "The older it gets, the better, but that might be a personal preference." Note: Don't forget to quote Tonia about getting older, getting better if you are delivering her biscotti to your Valentine!
