ArXotica Debut's First Of Several In Alaska Botanical Line
- 10-26-2009
- Categorized in: Market INSIGHTS
Arxotica's high-end botanical product line debuted this week with "Quyunglii," which means "the potent one" in their mother's Cup'ik language. Quyunglii is a serum made from crowberries, fireweed, and arctic sage, all hand gathered from the tundra wilderness.
You may remember Amy, Michelle and Cika Sparck as two-time Alaska Marketplace Winners. The Yukon-Kuskokwim Sparck sisters launched their skin care line during the 2009 Alaska Federation of Natives Convention in October. You may also remember that they kicked off Global Food Alaska 2007 with a spine tingling talk, "The Opportunities of Alaska".
These business women have been inspired by the natural resources of their region, including their people and culture. While they are seeking a limited number of exclusive customers for Quyungilii (anti-aging serum), they also hope to identify future market partners that can benefit and help share the unique story of their region, culture and product.
The Sparck triplets grew up in Bethel and spent summers and holidays in Chevak, a small village on the northwest border of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Michelle, Amy and Cika picked berries together on the tundra of Kokechek Bay and the Kuskokwim tributaries. Traditional use of these materials included homeopathic remedies and skin treatments.
Now the three women run a business they believe will introduce Yup'ik / Cup'ik inspired skin care products that will become a preferred part of a niche market for socially resonsible high end consumers. By highlighting a new market interest for exotic anti-oxidant source material in Western Alaska, the sister's hope to help diversify the region's economy. The sisters have also designed a mid-priced range of toiletries and soaps ready for introduction later in the year.

I wanted to let you know how excited I am for you with the start of you product line! Great things come to those who wait - so much of what we all do takes such patience and perseverence. Thank you also for such a beautiful video. I look forward to seeing you again and trying Quyunglii. Congratulations! Dulce;Kahiltna Birchworks
Robin, thanks for putting this up. You have been such an asset to ArXotica in all levels of development. Quyana!
We are also blessed to have met and made friends with so many amazing GFC members. Bear Creek Winery helped make our product debut party memorable (search AFN or ArXotica on the mudflats blog for the 'only' write-up of the star-studded event) and I hope Pete's Treats from Cordova joins up too. Since our meeting Chef Rob Kinneen of Orso at the Convention, we made an extra effort to reach out to him to see if he would work with one of our ingredients, Crowberry, in a special creation for the party - the sea scallop and Mat-Su pumpkin ceviche on sesame crackers was a hit! Now this is collaboration folks.
Perserverance, yes, that is what our small and isolated Rural businesses need. Especially when none of us have a business background!
Thanks Dulce, it is a huge compliment coming from you and Michael.
We hope to do a better job of conveying to interested Alaskans that we aren't only producing pricey products, we do have three other products designed for the high-end line (cleanser, toner and moisterizer) but we do have a mid-range priced line of toiletries coming out soon too. Head / Body wash, lotion and conditioner along with our soaps.
Quyana cakneq, Thanks so much to Robin and all our GFC friends.
