The project also plans to demonstrate that weight can be saved by the use of new light weight recyclable plastic fish boxes from DacoCorp, Inc and provide for a clean environment. This will allow the container to be used for hauling salmon in one direction and refrigerated perishables in the other.
The tests are planned for the summer months of June-September and distributed across the salmon regions. Alaska Airlines and Northern Air Cargo will be the primary carriers, although other carriers may be involved based on interest. Information will be available through the summer, with a final report summarizing each trip, the temperature records and loading configurations available in October.
AFDF is conducting this project with Tednologies under a grant from the Southeast Sustainable Salmon Fund, as administered by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The grant allows AFDF to provide the container and cover the weight of the empty container to and from the processors site. Processors shipping fish will also be provided the plastic fish boxes for their product.
For more information on the project, contact Bob Pawlowski, Executive Director, AFDF at 907-276-7315.
