Collaborative INSIGHTS

It's not easy being a food manufacturer in Alaska.   Besides being far from ingredients, packaging and markets, there is a limited private sector system that supports the needs of this type manufacturer with equipment, supplies and know how.     That is why we keep our Rolodex of those inside and outside of Alaska that have familiarity with Alaska's producers and products and been major contributors on best practices.

That is why it was such a pleasure to meet Bill Scott of R.L. Scott & Associates last summer.    Bill learned of Global Food Collaborative after reading a story about GFA 2007.   He had just been in Alaska for a tour of food producers and vowed to return to the next show in 2009.  The dialog has now continued for the past 9 months and over that time Bill has reviewed best practices of manufacturing for everything from seafood to nutraceuticals to coffee.    Here's a bit of what I've learned.

The Value Added Of Experience
The processing and packaging of food is a challenge because many preparing to do so - have never been before in the food manufacturing business.   How you design a best practices and optimally efficient process - whether it is one or 1200 people is a skill set?   In Alaska with energy, transportation and labor costs higher then other parts of the world - paying attention to efficiencies is make or break.

Bill showing Robin the finer points of packaged products from local producers.

Some of you joined me in such places as Iceland and Norway where we observed optimum uses of technologies with a less heavy reliance on labor for the purposes in challenging some of the ways we had learned to do business in Alaska.   Since then, food safety has become an even greater part of that total equation and thus - our on-going dialogue with R.L. Scott and Associates.   Bill has worked his entire professional life in and around food, beverage and bio products manufacturing throughout the Pacific Northwest - including Alaska.    There isn't a scenario that I've yet to find that he hasn't been there/done that in terms of being involved in growing these businesses - often from grass roots.    As I've connected Alaskan producers seeking help on processing/packaging equipment, Bill has taught me (and them) the value of connecting with an expert in the field.  He can look at the entire business process and instead of "quoting equipment", can help companies adopt best practices in food manufacturing that often include reducing costs and expanding capacity for growth.   I've found him an important partner to our supply chain objectives.
