Thomas Friedman's book, The World Is Flat, talked often about the individual's new found power of publishing and business using the internet. Marion was well on her way to accessing the world and providing a personal and comfortable window into life on Kodiak Island. Marion Owen is a resident of Kodiak, a master gardener, photographer, entrepreneur, and New York Times best-selling author. She was recently honored with a Women of Distinction award by Soroptimist International of the Americas.
Her history is rich, like many Alaskans, with stories of nature, independence and opportunity. She served for eight years as a seaman and merchant marine officer at sea. In 1984 Marion found her home in Kodiak, Alaska. Switching her focus from sea to land, Marion became a master gardener and garden writer. In addition to hands-on garden experience, Marion co-authored Chicken Soup for the Gardener's Soul, which spent three months on the New York Times bestseller list. In her published articles, the UpBeet Gardener newsletter (with subscribers in 50 countries), her award-winning UpBeet Gardener radio show (hear it at www.upbeetcommunications.com), and on her plantea.com web-site, Marion covers small business how-tos, healthy living tips, organic gardening, world events and trends, and environmental issues.
Marion has authored a number of articles in the last couple of years on health and our food sources. We have linked some of those, below. Now, Marion would like to collaborate with others around Alaska to encourage a sustainable, local food source for communities throughout Alaska. Interested? Drop her a note at Marion Owen.
Marion is an invited speaker to Global Food Alaska - 2007 to share her vision of "Setting The Stage - Maximizing Alaska's Bounty".
