Kodiak Island's Brand Launches Career In Film

What do a film maker, 3000 Kodiak Brown Bears and a new Alaska seafood brand have in common?
Quite a bit.
Read on to learn how Kodiak is developing its own form of agritourism.

Kodiak Island's Brand Launches Career In Film
Agritourism is big business around the world.   It has many versions, but Kodiak has taken what comes naturally through David Kaplan, documentary film maker.

The Star of Kodiak is a regional brand, established for the purposes of marketing and promotion of their unique seafood products.    Regional branding is relatively new to Alaska, but as their efforts mature, they are clearly each distinguishing themselves with innovation and success.

The Star of Kodiak promotes all five species of Wild Alaska Salmon; King (Chinook), Sockeye (Red), Coho (Silver), Pink (Humpback / Humpie) and Keta (Chum).   As part of their promotion program, The Star of Kodiak hosts and attends promotional events throughout the year.   Recent events included the Taste of Kodiak Seafood Cook-off, First Salmon of the Season, Minnesota Salmon Tour, Great Alaska Seafood Cook-off and the Colorado Tourism Conference.    During each of these events they showcase Kodiak Wild Salmon and their member's products.  Member companies voluntarily join the Star of Kodiak program and once qualified,  participants commit to deliver program fish, and stay in compliance with all of the program's practices and all products must meet both the program's quality and handling standards.

What is unique about the events where the "Star" is unveiled, is that David Kaplan, a documentary film maker from Kodiak, alsos feature a short film or slide show of the region, its wildlife, commercial and sport harvests of seafood and answer questions.   As a former biologist with the State of Alaska, his commentary is well informed and told in a story format that captivates the audience.    Beyond the local and national shows, David's company affiliation takes him all over the world where he presents his shows and the Star of Kodiak Products.    The reaction is overwhelmingly positive.     While David provides international audiences with access to Kodiak and its products, he also offers another twist.   He also provides the Star of Kodiak Program a short film or slide show of the event where he has participated and the reaction of audiences to the product and presentations.  David's marketing methods, on behalf of the Star of Kodiak, unqiuely leverage tourism, seafood from its members and the a breadth of opportunities that provide both a window into Kodiak and a window to the world for Kodiak producers.
