The facility serves a wide spectrum of customer and service requirements. The most common function that occurs at the Anchorage facility is serving as the fob (freight on board) point between buyer and seller. A buyer who purchases a quantity of seafood from a producer located in Alaska will direct the producer to ship the seafood to the distribution center in Anchorage where the buyer will take possession. The buyer then directs Movers to ship this product to various destinations throughout the United States. Seafood arrives from all over Alaska, including many of the regions profiled previously in Collaborative INSIGHTS - Kodiak, Kenai, Bethel, etc. As a result, Movers has developed a number of products and services to its established clientele, including insurance that reduces the risk
International air freight forwarders also use the Movers distribution center to receive, label, and refrigerate product destined for international locations. International air carriers, on the other hand, use the distribution center as a receiving agent to receive perishable products on behalf of the air carrier. The distribution center is then responsible for 'building up' such perishable traffic according to air carrier specifications and tendering it 'plane side'.
Movers provides, unscheduled, temporary refrigerated storage for air traffic transiting the Anchorage Airport. That traffic ranges from flowers to live sea urchins to live lobsters to produce to highly prized sushi grade tuna. This activity involves recovering the shipment from the air carrier tarmac, bringing it to the distribution facility, refrigerating it in the distribution center variable controlled temperature coolers, and re-tendering the shipment to the air carrier tarmac in time for the international air carrier departure.
Needless to say, the challenges of changing schedules, products and seasons requires quick thinking on the part of the Movers employees. With 50 employees, the company practice is to be flexible and resolve problems quickly and get that product where it needs to be in the condition expected by its long-term customers. As a direct result of this guardianship role, Movers Inc. expanded its operation into Washington State for more and better tracking of high quality seafood products.
Movers Inc. has grown along side the Ted Stevens International Airport during the past 25 years and seen major changes in aircraft, air carriers, seafood products, technology and markets. Through it all, Movers has consistently delivered fresh seafood products with a personal touch of a family operated business and the predictability of an experienced professional staff and system.
