If you haven't ever - you should check out the website of Alaska Glacial Mud. For one thing - it reflects Lauren's professional, yet personal touch throughout her entire business process. Check out the testimonial section including one from the Copper River fisherman. Why not treat yourself to a mud mask while waiting for the next opening?
Seriously, Alaska Glacial Mud is a hit with sales throughout Alaska and the lower 48 at upscale spas and retailers and inquiries from Singapore, Germany, Italy and South Korea. Lauren is fastidious about the entire process from harvest to production to distribution and keeps an eye on nearly every aspect to control quality and make certain that she has met her customers expectations. She jokingly calls herself the founder and chief mudslinger and what that really translates to - is that she has done it all. Lauren has conducted the research and development, prospected manufacturing options, designed and developed the packaging, website and show exhibit booth and is generally the face you'll see at events promoting her product. Lauren is careful to qualify her commercial success with the fact that she has learned well to ask for help and has done so all along the start up and commercialization phases of her business.
Today Lauren still harvests pure glacial mineral mud from the Copper River delta and marries it with other extracts to form a line of nourishing, high quality, beneficial skin care products, and she is now taking steps to expand her existing business. She is researching local flora and in pre-development on new products. She is especially interested in collaborating with others throughout Alaska, Canada and the Pacific Northwest on sourcing extracts and oils unique to the northern regions. Beyond these efforts for her company, Lauren works with others in the Cordova region on other bio-based products that offer other opportunities for commercialization on a scale that allows a sustainable community and environment.
Lauren says she is not a cosmetic junky - she just found the intrinsic qualities of mud and built her business. It's a niche and one that blends beautifully with the intrinsic health value of Alaska's salmon - only instead of internal - it's external health and beauty. I guess you can get it all in Cordova.
