Copper River Seafoods was established in 1996 as a result of a merger of three fishermen-owned and operated companies: Copper River Catch, Copper River Fine Seafoods, and Copper River Wild. Pip Fillingham, Bill Bailey and Scott Blake, owner/operators of Copper River Seafoods came together with like philosophies about quality, profit to fishermen and a belief that they could add value to the Alaska seafood buyer at the same time continuing to base their operations in Alaska. Today, they are proving that out.

Scott Blake, President, Copper River Seafoods

Last year, Copper River Seafoods opened a brand new, year round, processing plant in Anchorage regularly handling salmon, halibut and rockfish. A big step for CRS who still owns and operates a plant in Cordova, the new plant was staffed with enthusiastic and talented professionals eager to realize the Copper River philosophy of adding value for a growing customer base.     This 2008 season, the plant gears up after even more work remodeling its plant floors, refrigeration, lines and loading areas - all designed to improve its product quality.

Recognizing the critical relationship of time/temperature with their seafood, Copper River Seafoods not only modified its plant around a stronger cool chain, but it drastically challenged past distribution models and offered commercial seafood buyers a product with several links in the distribution removed - not only reducing cost, but increasing the shelf-life of the product.      There's no doubt that Alaska is far from most of its major markets and achieving a better solution was a hallmark to 2008.

What is apparent if you've visited or done business with CRS is that sustainable and safe food products is not an afterthought.   They've retained professional full-time staff that manages and implements a Quality Management Program that includes HACCP and product quality controls that meet or exceed US standards.   This year, CRS initiated a United States Department of Commerce Quality Management Program offering US Grade A product.    Buyers seeking the Marine Stewardship label and assurance of sustainable seafood are assured the chain of custody program.

The CRS owners don't stray far from their roots and still actively participate in harvesting salmon every year aboard their own vessel.     They also are not straying far from their customers, keeping an eye on market changes and regularly syncing Copper River Seafoods with their growing and distinguished list of clients.
